Guerlain Ecrin 2 Couleurs in Two Stylish

When a purchase comes in a cloth casing and is accompanied by a manual, you know it's an investment. At £30 a piece for 4g of product, Guerlain's new Ecrin 2 Couleurs duo compacts definitely fit the description. This one is Two Stylish, and is one of eight colourways released as part of Guerlain's Fall collection for 2013.

The packaging is pretty special - the compact is hinged at the short end and has a high-reflective finish that's not quite gold, not quite silver. The curved planes and sharp, precise lines are distinctively Guerlain, as is the embossed logo near the clasp. It feels like a vintage cigarette lighter or something - very sophisticated and pleasant to handle. On the downside, it is a total fingerprint magnet - just as well it comes with a velveteen cloth slip-case which can be used to polish it back to a pristine shine.

So, under the hood... two eyeshadows, one embossed with the Guerlain initial logo. One is a matte, vivid shade, and the other has a high-shine, sheer finish. They're designed to be layered together. Two Stylish includes a mid-toned matte blue that leans towards teal, and a platinum-greenish shade that's something like the colour of an old £1 coin.

Payoff is okay-ish - they're not rich, buttery shadows and they have a slight tendency to develop a shiny surface if you use them with your fingers. Best to use a brush. The pairing of the colours is superb and creates a striking but surprisingly wearable effect.

I must admit to being more sold on the packaging than I am on the product inside - something that happens to me more often these days (now that I own pretty much every eyeshadow shade I could ever imagine).

Two Stylish and the other seven Ecrin 2 Couleurs shades will be available from Guerlain from 1 August 2013.

  1. That is GORGEOUS. I'm not normally one to lust after packaging but you're right, it is pretty special. (And I don't have any shadows quite those colours...)

What eyeliner are you wearing, if I may ask? It blends in really nicely with the blue, looks just a titch darker.

    1. I don't think I've actually got any eyeliner on - it's most likely just stray mascara. /cosmetic slattern

It is a seriously nice objet d'whatever, regardless of utility value.

  2. Pretty enough, but a bit meh. Certainly not £30 (as much as I love Guerlain). However, I'm really looking forward to the lipsticks and THAT blush! ♥

  3. Oh! The colors are beautiful but I'm starting to think Guerlain missed out on these since you're not the only one who's not enthusiastic about the textures. The packaging is stunning but even if it is one of the reason we buy we still need a good product at that price. :)

    1. I'm inclined to agree with you, although I do own another Guerlain eye palette that I've rarely used and mostly just enjoy looking at.
