Review & Swatches: Clarins Summer 2013 Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balms

I have no idea why I haven't posted about these yet.  If Sarah had her paws on these, you can bet they would have been photographed, edited, written up and smushed onto her lips within about a day.  You see, these Clarins Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balms are a regular release for Clarins - and Sarah has absolutely adored every version released by the brand.  Understandable, really - they're lovely lip products in their own right, and also look pretty damn cool with their colourful translucence.

Anyway, the two shades above are from the summer 2013 selection - there are four in total.  They combine a clear balm with a pigmented colour core, giving a beautifully moist lip look.  Crystal Gold Plum and Crystal Berry are both shimmering colours, somewhat different from last year.

Crystal Berry

Crystal Gold Plum
I think Crystal Gold Plum is the more flattering of the two shades on me, as it's not a million miles from my hair colour.  Crystal Berry is a gloriously punchy shade, though - much more vampy.

The balms are plush and comfortable to wear, and although you do get a good whack of pigment, the squishy balm base doesn't really promote long wear.  My only criticism is that because the pigment is in the middle of the lipstick, you kind of need to apply the bullet as a whole around the lips rather than staying within the lipline, or you'll end up with a weird colour gradient effect in the middle of the mouth.  Not a massive problem though, just takes some getting used to.

You'll find these lovely balms at the Clarins website, and at Clarins counters, where they'll cost £18 each.
