Packaging Watch: Urban Decay Primer Potion

Almost a year ago I cut up a "finished" UDPP tube and found a sample pot worth of product which I'd not been able to get to with the standard straight applicator.  At the time, a lot of bloggers were busy cutting up their tubes and berating Urban Decay for their wasteful packaging.  UD's response was to introduce a slanted applicator, which in theory would allow you to access more of the product in the tube.

So, when I recently finished off my UDPP with the enhanced slanted tip, I thought I'd cut it up again to see if it did indeed make a difference.

The first cut, and it's not looking so good.  There's a whole load of product lurking directly underneath the mouth of the tube, even though I've been twirling the slanted applicator in an attempt to get at the product in the bulge.  I proceeded to cut off the end and transfer the remaining product into a sample pot.

After scraping the product out of the tube (and discarding the stuff immediately next to the plastic edges I cut, as they contained little bits of plastic), I ended up with a full sample pot.  Again.  It seems that the slanted applicator tip has in fact made bugger all difference to the wastage in the prettily shaped tube.

Oi, you, Urban Decay!  Please put UDPP in a squeezy tube!

  1. Ugh such wastage! This is the sole reason i would buy TFSI instead of UDPP

  2. that is awful! thanks for the update was wondering if the slant made any difference! it is silly they would probably save money on an easier squeezy tube than what it is in!

  3. Or they can put UDPP in a jar...? I don't know but this original tube already look so not user friendly

  4. The packaging is pretty but so wasteful! It's a good idea to cut it open - I do the same with tubes of things, it's always good to have little empty pots handy!

  5. I don't think you could put UDPP in a jar for normal packaging, it would dry out very quickly. The stuff I scooped out will dry out too unless I'm very careful about screwing the lid on the jar!

  6. That's crazy! That's an awful lot of product to just 'lose' because of the packaging. They really need to fix up sharp.

  7. Wow! That is good to know! I was planning on buying it, and if I do, I'll make sure to open it at the end so I don't waste all that primer. Thank you!

  8. I was wondering if the newer applicator would make any difference. That's a no then! I wish they'd put it in a squeezy tube like their face primers are in.

  9. Such a shame. I'm in two minds about the packaging. On the one hand it's a pain to have to take a saw to the bottle just to get your moneys worth. On the other hand I love how the bottle looks! x

  10. I have a tube I stopped getting stuff out from 6 months ago but I got too lazy to chop it open, the 1st bottle I chopped was a pain so I bought TFSI 3rd time around. UD will not get anymore primer cashola from me.
That old not cut up bottle is probably bad now too.

  12. How do you manage to cut open your tube? I have a sample bottle and am keen to use up every bit of it before I replace!

  13. If you follow this link to my old blog, there are full instructions:

Basically, serrated knife, and be very careful!

  14. That's exactly why I stick to TFSI, same quality product, but not only is the too faced version cheaper, you also get your moneys worth (without involving knives :P )
